In 2017 severe maternal morbidity (SMM) from hypertension was 7.6%, despite an overall SMM for all obstetric complications being less than 2%.  In 2020 the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership initiated implementation of the AIM Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy patient safety bundle in all delivering hospitals in the state. Despite limited access to medical care and healthcare providers due to the pandemic, efforts by the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership to provide education, evidence-based patient materials, and implementation of the Home BP monitoring program helped maintain early recognition and treatment for hypertensive disorders during and post pregnancy.

The statewide rate of SMM among birthing patients with severe hypertension, excluding those who only received blood transfusions, decreased from an average of 6.5% (2017-2019) to 5.5% in 2020, a reduction of 15%.

In 2022 a renewed effort continues to provide facilities with education, materials, data support and opportunities for sharing of ideas and innovative processes across the delivering hospitals.
