AIM Partners
WHAT IS AIM?
The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) is a national data-driven maternal safety and quality improvement initiative based on proven implementation approaches to improving maternal safety and outcomes in the U.S. Our end goal is to eliminate preventable maternal mortality and severe morbidity across the United States.
AIM works through state teams and health systems to align national, state, and hospital-level quality improvement efforts to improve overall maternal health outcomes.
West Virginia has been an AIM state since 2018, with the implementation of the Obstetrical Hemorrhage Patient Safety Bundle. With participation from all delivering hospitals in the state, the bundle elements were instituted in the majority of the facilities and staff and provider education increased.
Currently, West Virginia is coordinating the efforts to implement the Sever Hypertension in Pregnancy Patient Safety Bundle.
West Virginia Impact Statement 2022
Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy Patient Safety Bundle Implementation
In 2017 severe maternal morbidity (SMM) from hypertension was 7.6%, despite an overall SMM for all obstetric complications being less than 2%. In 2020 the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership initiated implementation of the AIM Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy patient safety bundle in all delivering hospitals in the state. Despite limited access to medical care and healthcare providers due to the pandemic, efforts by the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership to provide education, evidence-based patient materials, and implementation of the Home BP monitoring program helped maintain early recognition and treatment for hypertensive disorders during and post pregnancy.
The statewide rate of SMM among birthing patients with severe hypertension, excluding those who only received blood transfusions, decreased from an average of 6.5% (2017-2019) to 5.5% in 2020, a reduction of 15%.
In 2022 a renewed effort continues to provide facilities with education, materials, data support and opportunities for sharing of ideas and innovative processes across the delivering hospitals.
